My students and I watched it this afternoon- all of my students (grades 6th-8th). I only had one student complain because he didn’t want any “political talk” but all of the teachers had read a copy of the speech earlier so we ensured the students that this was a speech for them that included no political points. I told my students how unlike other speeches about health insurance, social security, and the economy, this is one that relates directly to them and because of that, many of them were interested in. But yes, have your students watch it- it will be a good thing for them to see.

that reminds me of something that happened a few years ago. bill cosby said (i think, don’t quote me directly) something along the lines that black parents were teaching their kids the wrong values by buying them $200 sneakers instead of books. (or something like that)
people were up in arms. furious. but – when you really thought about what he was trying to say – it made sense. what we prioritize trickles down to our kids and if you don’t make education a priority, neither will they.
anyway, i agree. i don’t see what the fuss is. we were all about ‘personal responsibility’ with the credit/mortgage crisis, but now its bad. maybe americans just like to be angry and yell about things.
